Your peace of mind comes first—that's why our Alexa devices (One Echo Show 8 in the kitchen, 3 Echo Spots in bedrooms, and one Floater device) start muted by default, with the microphone light ring glowing red to show it's off-limits for listening. Here's the lowdown:

• Muting the mic: Tap the microphone button (top of the device) to mute—it stops Alexa from picking up any sound or wake word ("Alexa"). The red light confirms it's silenced.

• Unmuting the mic: Tap the button again to unmute—the light turns off, and Alexa is ready to respond to your voice commands "What's the weather?" It only "listens" for the wake word, not constant surveillance.
